Five new albums that you should add to your music queue
Well, music definitely hit the headlines last month. Unless you’ve taken an early hibernation I’m sure you’ve had your ears attached to the new Lily Allen album, divulging in not only a fantastic album, but also a hefty dose of celebrity gossip. And from West End Girl to Showgirl Taylor Swift was also topic of conversation last month, with her brand new album.
It’s been an exceptional month for showcasing women in music, as all five of my picks this month are female vocalists. Five amazing albums which all warranted repeat listening.
I’ve used Spotify links for each album, but these LP’s are available on other platforms. Let us know which you liked best.
Lily Allen - West End Girl
Pop
Let’s start with the big one then. Lily Allen has always had a talent for storytelling through her lyrics and wow this album is no different. This album is full of ear worm tunes that soundtracked an Autumn walk, and still every song puts the lyrics front and centre. Perhaps a couple of songs too long but a complete tale from the artist’s perspective. Inspired by a breakup under the spotlight, this honest album demands you listen and leaves very little unsaid.
TOP TRACK: Sleepwalking
dodie - Not For Lack Of Trying
Indie Jazz
Pensive and gentle but packing a punch, this is a step up from dodie’s previous releases, with some really interesting progressions through sections to make this album really pop.
TOP TRACK: I feel bad for you, Dave
Brandi Carlisle - Returning to Myself
Folk Rock
I am enamoured by Brandi Carlisle’s voice; there’s a smoothness to it and this album showcases that beautifully. The album is varied with big bold number Church & Satte followed by stunning ode Joni, yet their transition feels natural. Brandi is and should be at the very top right now.
TOP TRACK: Church & State
Couch - Big Talk
Funk Pop
This is full of energy; it’s feel good music evoking the same positive energy that classic soul and disco bands used to produce. Then Static & Noise plays which I think is one of the best tracks of the year, and the album soars to another level. This will leave you desperate to see Couch live.
TOP TRACK: Static & Noise
Yazmin Lacey - Teal Dreams
Soul
As soul music continues to (finally) make a commercial comeback, Yazmin Lacey should without question, be a main player in that movement. This album showcases her effortless voice and there’s something so carefree about it generally. One of those albums you’ll get lost in.
TOP TRACK: Longest Way Round
Bonus Tracks
Over the course of these posts, I’ll be assembling a playlist for Spotify users to download should they wish. Joining the top tracks from each of the listed albums, will be five bonus tracks I enjoyed from albums that didn’t quite make the cut.
Something Heavy - Jacob Collier
Puddles - Not for Radio
Fairchild - Dave
Skeletree - Madison Cunningham
Lucky To Be Stuck With You - Couch
The playlist now hits 60 tracks. Just two months to go until the end of the year, and I’m hopeful my album of 2025 is yet to release. What’s been your favourite album of the year so far? I’d love to give them a listen.
