This month’s been a really populated month for new album releases. With festival season kicking off, (including the biggest festival in the world Glastonbury), music artists old and new fill our ears with their new sounds. And this list really captures that, with artists from years gone by, new collaborations and returns to form. Give one a listen that sounds up your street, and let me know what you thought; or even better, challenge yourself to listen to them all.
I’ve used Spotify for all the links, but these albums are available on other platforms.
Hope We Have Fun - Mt. Joy
Alternative/Indie Rock
The perfect playlist for your summer camping trip, it’s indie rock with striking guitar textures creating a folky undertone.
TOP TRACK: Pink Lady
Lotus - Little Simz
Hip-Hop/Rap
The way Little Simz tells stories demands you to listen, yet there’s something so quiet about it all. The production on this album is off the charts and for me this matches the heights of Sometimes I might be Introvert.
TOP TRACK: Young
Love Made Trees - Loaded Honey
Pop/Soul
From the minds of Jungle, this is a more chilled project for J Lloyd and Lydia Kitto. Perhaps lacking a bit of bite later in the album, it’s an easy listening compilation of some romantically driven tracks. A welcome bit of something different from two of the biggest players in British music today.
TOP TRACK: Don’t Speak
More - Pulp
Britpop/Art Rock
It’s like they never left. Pulp manage to transport you to the 90’s whilst keeping a modern day energy and unique feel to their tracks. They are older, and their commenting on that, not hiding from where they are now musically in comparison to 30 years ago, yet it never feels spiteful or tired.
TOP TRACK: Tina
2 - Foxwarren (Andy Shauf,Darryl Kissick)
Alternative Folk
Quite frequently they becloud the boundaries between genres and sustain a level of fluidity throughout. It’s cinematic, with snippets from classic noir film that adds to the crusty (meant as a complement) feel of the whole album. Andy Shauf is so gentle with his songwriting and that pours into his work here with Darryl Kissick for Foxwarren. Long may their collaboration continue.
TOP TRACK: Sleeping
Bonus Tracks
Over the course of these posts, I’ll be assembling a playlist for Spotify users to download should they wish. Joining the top tracks from each of the listed albums, will be five bonus tracks I enjoyed from albums that didn’t quite make the cut.
spin cycle - Yaya Bey
Lonely Cosmos - King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
Holy Mountain - Obongjayer
STAY WITH ME! - Tiberius B
Someone Like You - Herbert, Momoko Gill
There you have it, five albums to listen to over the next month and a couple of bonus tracks too. Let us know which you liked best.
